Losing text msgs..

Just wandering if I'm alone here.. I use Handcent for my text messages, however this happening in my stock messaging as well.. I receive a text, can see it and read it in my notification bar and panel, then when I go to open it in Handcent or stock, it completely disappears.. as if it were never sent or received.. I'm having to tell people to resend their messages so I can actually respond.. Is it just me?..
