That's not so much a virus as a maliscious app. It said the app wasn't from the market and a media player app should have permissions dealing with txts. As has been said before check the permissions for the apps you download and if it doesn't jive with what the app does, don't install.
Who knows if lookout would have caught this? It was given permission to do what it did.

A virus and or trojan is ran off of a malicious app that you download on your pc, same thing here buddy. An application is the same thing as an executable. I'm sure I'm not the only one that doesn't download apps from only the Marketplace. Apps are only going to get smarter and it's better to be safe than sorry!
But still....does lookout check for things you gave it permission to do?

Lookout checks for unusual permissions and gives a warning during install if they seem excessive. It checks for known malware (so may have missed the first few installs of this, but once it was reported, their update would catch it). Also, the lookout developers are the ones who have discovered much of the Malware that is in the wild, so they are out hunting it.
Given the popularity of Android, and the ease of programming for it in Java (and even the low entry cost and lack of controls on the official market) it is going to be the target of malware, and having some kind of protection is just being smart.

I wonder if you could run this on a virtual copy of Android (ie, on your computer). Then you would just have to install the app on the computer, then, if it's fine, install it your phone (without lookout, etc.)
While I think the idea is good, I would never accept the battery drain, and as jstafford1 has been pointing out, just using some common sense is still good enough to keep you safe.

Lookout does more than just sniff out exploited apps. They offer Security, backup, and just in case your device is missing, you can sound an alarm when the phone is in silent mode and also track it via GPS. In the news not to long ago, a man was carjacked. He remembered that he left his Android phone in the car. He logged on to the website and told the cops where his car was.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you choose to be able to install non market apps then run around installing things like mad from Chinese websites or Russian text messages, not checking for permissions or whether or not the app works as advertised after you install it, you have a lot more problems than antivirus. If you're that excesively trusting/naive/stupid then while you were downloading that trojan, someone was probably robbing your house which you left unlocked with a sign on the for that says "please dont come in here, i have recently made an inheritance and all of the money is under my couch in a shoe box. Oh and if you do come in dont touch my recently purchased 70 inch plasma since i havent had the time to propperly wall mount it yet and it would be very easy to remove."

i have a droid x i dont understand how these people on here call lookout useless. go to battery manager when.your phone is almost dead and ill bet you money lookout is not one of those percentages. lookout can only do good plus track your phone.
