Linux computer won't recognize Galaxy S

I recently switched from WIndows 7 to Linux on my home computer. My computer will recognize my Droid 2 and allow me to see and access files on the SD card, but when I connect my friends Galaxy S (running 2.1 firmware) it shows up but when I double click it nothing happens. Any Linux savvy users who can point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.
