Kindle screen too bright for night reading

I've turned off auto-bright and dialed down the native settings to lowest. I've installed a couple of "dimmer" apps. All make no diff: when the book is opened, the brightness returns to too high.

Open a book
click the setting button
Choose View Options
You can choose: White, Sephia, Black.

I have Black on all the time. It's black background with whte lettering. Just works for me.

I wish Kindle would incorporate a mechanism for adjusting brightness, similar to Aldiko, where you're able to use a side of the screen to change the brightness directly.

Brightness for reading books -- bottom button dimming?

Now that I have solid control of the screen brightness for night reading, I'm wondering if there is any way to turn off the lights illuminating the four buttons at the base (I can cover them with a thick rubber band)--they are way too bright with the screen dialed back.

if you're rooted, try LEDhack. IT turn off the soft buttons.
