Just Saw Mars...With the help of my Droid

Earlier tonight, my Dad and I were outside with our telescope and computers, getting ready to view Mars.

Our Celestron telescope always needs to pinpoint two large objects--like stars, or clearly visible planets--in order to be able to zoom in on specific objects in the system files. However, getting to the point of "zooming to planets" requires that you go through the process of finding two-three other objects in the sky to help it figure out where it is...

Bottom line: I went on the market and download Google Sky and within 10 minutes, we were focusing in on Mars and capturing videos of it...Close enough that we could even see the ice caps! Having my Droid handy saved us, what is usually, hours of time and let us enjoy ourselves even more. My girlfriend, dad, mom, and I all had a great time viewing the stars for longer than usual.

Thanks Droid :)

Awesome! I've only tried this walking randomly at night, and It seems to be very accurate for a phone app. I'm glad it worked well for you.

That's really cool. Google Sky is an amazing app. If there weren't so much light polution down here, I'd already have a decent telescope.

It was even funnier because my Dad, who has his company on Sprint, said: "I really need to go get one of those phones now..." Since i'm in college, he won't have this around for too much longer.

I won't be surprised to see another Droid or two show up in this house.

and I will be uploading the video to Youtube within the next day or so!

The DROID DOES! Haha... As for those telescopes I just about an hour looking through their site. Thats some impressive stuff. Makes me want to buy one.
Also, im looking forward to seeing this vid.

I show people that and they go crazy as well. One person had an iPhone and sure enough...they don't have an app for that.

Hah, this thread is hilarious... what is it with people with Droids and looking for Mars?

I did the same thing, the same night you did.

Great app up here in the North Woods of Wisconsin, since it's so dark at night you can see every star in the sky as clear as the sun. Almost makes me not want to go back to LA.

Which model telescope do you have? They have a pretty big range of models. I've been thinking about picking up one so my son and I can check out the planets.
