Is the Droid 1 dead in terms of OS updates/upgrades?

I like my Droid 1 but wonder if there will ever be an update or upgrade to it's OS?

If not, then I think it's time for me to root the thing and see what I can squeeze out of it.

It will probably not get anymore updates! The only update now is gingerbread, and the d1 will not see gingerbread! I rooted my d1 about 8 months ago and have never looked back. Its like getting a new phone with all the things you can do once rooted! Just do your research first!

Officially there won't be any OTA upgrades.

However, this development community keeps pushing out the ROMs and you can have Gingerbread thanks to the talent on this forum.

I strongly suggest rooting. Your phone will feel like new!

GB can be run on the OG DROID, however there are problems with every GB build out there. Some are small things, others are larger problems. I played around w/ GB for a little bit, but the lack of being able to multitask sent me running back to froyo.

Froyo just works on the D1. GB uses way too much ram for the D1 to be able to handle it correctly. I've been using the Droid Concepts roms and they work great. AFAIK Droid Concepts is the only froyo rom for the D1 that is still being updated, all of the others have moved on to Gingerbread.

Do some research about what is involved w/ rooting and loading a custom recovery. Its really not difficult, just a little overwhelming at first. This board is a GREAT resource for helping with issues that might arise. Oh and these phones are very difficult to brick permanently, you can always restore a backup to get back to where you were beforehand.

Agreed with previous post, the Devs have done an outstanding job bringing us gingerbread roms but everyone I have tried has been a resource killer. Its not a dev issue its just the phone is not meant to handle GB. It is why I am waiting to see how the root process on the d3 plays out and that will be my next phone, most likely. My D1 has become so sluggish handling apps now that is causes more frustration than good. I love this phone dearly but it is time to move on.

To be or not to be........................wait what was the question? This signature has been Tapatalk approved.

I use SS 5.4 with no problems. Maybe it's just my phone but no gingerbread issues here.

Agreed running simply stunning 5.4 and I have no issues at all. If ur not rooted and rommed... do it trust me u wont turn back. In fact u will wonder why u hadn't done it sooner.

You definitel gotta root your droid. I was using pe 5 (and then the 6beta) but my phone wasn't too fond of gb so I went back to pe 4.2 and it runs great.

I went back from an x2 to my og just because no matter how powerful a phone, its nothing if its so locked down you have no customization control. Froyo roms seem to be the most stable but some have luck with gb.

Pete's GPA roms are also pretty good from my experience. Less slowdowns and such if you're on a LV 1.2ghz kernel aswell, it ran amazingly smooth. CyanogenMod7 also has plenty of bells and whistles, keep in mind you're on the sholes platform(this is D1 model when you're downloading a cm build w/o rom manager), though it slowed my old D1 a little more than GPA. Probably just more stuff in it than GPA. You could also try Sourcery. Root and get rommin'! :)

Presently running both my D1 and D2G on CM7.
