is root the only way?

ok so my question to you guys is, by any chance is there a way to where you can edit some OS files like for example fonts and stuff like that without rooting your phone. i been looking around the forums and i dont think i have found an answer or a question about this. if so what is the procedure to do it. im trying to play with my DX without rooting it, being that i have bad luck with cellphones and smartphones. hope to hear some input from you guys and thank you.

k thanks ahhh im having a internal battle to root or not to root lol, im just thinking of buying a used droid so i can play around and stuff...

Well as long as you carefully follow directions you shouldnt mess up your phone during the root process. If you smash up your phone and the warranty people look whats on your phone and see root files, it will be cancelled.
