IRC and the non technical

I have a rooted droid, have done many things to it that void my warranty BUT I cannot figure out IRC.

I gather it is some type of chat room experience but how do I use it? Do I need a special app or log in or handshake or secret codeword?

Thanks for any pointers that will let me try out this stuff.

Google is your friend. Search for an IRC client, download it and install into your computer and away you go. Now navigating to a particular room can sometimes be difficult. Try to get someone just to send you a link in that situation.

You can't use your phone for irc chat. At least you can't in the Droid Forums chat room.

Actually I had downloaded an app to my phone but got even more confused. You helped out a lot by just letting me know it is really not a phone application but more of a PC one.
