Install Gingerbread on Droid - pretty basic with a twist (need help)

Heya everyone!

Ok, here's the deal:
My wife has the OG droid - but she uses it as a PDA/Internet machine. It doesn't even have service anymore - just connects through wifi at home and at her work. It is not rooted, it is running 2.2.2.
I would like to install 2.3 on it. Can anyone give me a detailed set of instructions and links on how I could do this please?

If you want official gingerbread that's a negative because gingerbread never officially came top the og however if you want you can root and therefore move onto gingerbread. However please read the faq to any rom you choose before flashing because some roms gave known issues...
