I sometimes get grey bars and wifi

I am new to the smartphone. I got a Nexus Galaxy for Christmas. I sometimes have a hard time getting on the internet. The bars go from grey to blue and then back to grey. o you think i need to update the phone or is there a problem with it?....Thanks

When blue that means your connected to google services, white means you have data connection but no google services. Look through all the posts you will see that all the new 4G phones have data drop issues.
