The number one reason I always return to Nexus devices year after year is their developer friendliness. These phones are meant to be Google's standard, and as such are a great development tool for app and game developers. This also means that these phones can't be locked down by carriers. The Nexus 6P and 5X come with a locked bootloader, but no worries it is just as easy to unlock these bootloaders as previous Nexus models.

How to Unlock Nexus 5X and 6P Bootloaders

1. From Phone Enable Developer Options (Settings, About phone, tap build number 7x)
2. Go to Developer Options and Enable OEM unlock, and turn on USB Debugging
3. Plug phone into PC and wait for usb drivers to install (or manually install USB Drivers)
4. Install Android SDK on PC, or just install the quick ADB and Fastboot
5. Boot Phone into Fastboot Mode (Volumedown+Power)
6. From PC open command prompt
7. Type adb devices (if no device is listed make sure phone is in fastboot mode, usb drivers are properly installed, and adb and fastboot files are properly installed)
8. If device is recognized type "fastboot oem unlock"
9. You will get a message warning you about voiding your warranty asking you if you want to proceed, select yes
10. Phone is now bootloader unlocked.
11. Your device will wipe data and reboot

Does it truly kill your warranty though? I thought nexus devices were more modding friendly.
