How to sync phone and laptop?

Is there a simple way to tether my Droid X2 with my Windows 7 laptop using Outlook so as to get all of my e-mail co-ordinated between the two. Couldn't find a tutorial on the forum.

No replies so let me elaborate, being a novice at this. Until just now I mistakenly thought that all I had to do was tether my phone and laptop and there was some built-in way to sync email between the two. I have found a few free apps in the market that appear to do this but the cost is borne in the purchase of the laptop program in order to make it work. I've seen prices from $40 and upwards for these.
So to rephrase my question, does there exist any free way of doing this?
