how to send a message to a friend on facebook

i cant for the life of me figure this out. When i go into facebook, all i can do is write on their wall. How do i send a message? im normally not a complete retard when it comes to this stuff, but ive tried everything i can think of.

if you go on facebook through your phone, right above the persons name should be two links, one to message and one to poke. you also have to be on mobile facebook
