How do I condition the battery in my new Galaxy SIII?

I see several mentions of conditioning the battery of your Android phone, but no explanation of how to do that. It is not in the SIII user manual I downloaded either. Can someone tell me how to condition my battery
and what benefits I can expect from conditioning? Also, should my phone be off when I charge the battery, or does that not matter? I'm used to leaving my old phone on when I charge it.
