I believe if you delete conversations from the app it just makes them invisible to the app but still visible in other sms apps so the space is not recouped and I don't think it auto cleans. Any suggestions

I have not had any issues with deleted messages and conversations that I deleted within Messages appearing in other SMS apps.

if you have several different apps reading the messages on different devices or even the same device, there is always a chance it will still be there.

I think you will have to go to each and manually delete them.

How to Permanently Delete Text Messages from Android Phone
It depends on how you delete the data ? you do know the deleted messages can be recovered back from "Recycling bins"

You should have to manually delete them. This is the best option.

Bummer wish it had a n option to auto delete after x days

The delete button does not permanently erase the messages you are deleting. Instead, it makes the text messages disappear from the phone for you not to see them again. Therefore, you will not see them and they will not be removed permanently unless rewritten by new data.In this situation, you could use 3rd party messages eraser.MobiKin Eraser for Android professional tool can help you make it. It scans and detects the Android phone data thoroughly and automatically.
