Yes you need it to resize the icons or use adw

I started using bettercut with my shortcut icons. Is there any way to not have the name of the program on the bottom?

When you make your shortcut, delete the name.

Still leaves that chat bubble at the bottom.

I use desktop visualizer and you can clear the label and there is no bubble.
