Hi, I'm Al. My R2D2 experience.

I've had a droid phone for a little over a year now, having started with the D1. I liked it plenty enough, but was overjoyed when I saw the R2D2. I ordered it right away, passing my D1 to my brother.

My D1 has never been opened up, though I've thought about doing it. My bro doesn't seem to mind how it runs stock, so I may not.

After a few months of enjoying my R2D2, the idea of opening it up and seeing what kind of performance it was capable of without all the verizon and moto stuff bogging it down had finally gotten to me. I searched out in the forums to find rooting info, watched videos, and such a few times over to get acquainted with the task I was about to do.

I was really surprised at how easily it was to acheive, as I followed the instructions of a D2 phone to get my phone rooted. After that, I found the bootstrapper and set out to find a custom ROM that would suit my wants.
I followed the instructions of backing up my original file before beginning the task of flashing APEX 1.4.1 onto my device. For those who wonder, I DID NOT sbf my phone to 2.3.20 before this. I followed instructions and links from the unlockr. It was all so incredibly simple.

I got the new system all set up in my phone and have not noticed any trouble. Thank goodness too, because it was about an hour or so after getting all my stuff set up that I decided to go back into my SD card and remove the installer zips. It was here that I went horribly wrong.

I was curious about the size of the backup file so I went into that folder. when I exited, I scrolled down, CTRL selected the two installer files, and hit DEL, Yes. Wait a minute... 3 files??? NONONONONO!!! Anyway, anyone following that knows just what I did... I now have an R2D2 without a factory image. I joined this forum to hopefully seek a new factory image, if one exists, just in case it should ever be needed. Anyone have any help to offer with that, please PM me, send email, use smoke signals, yell and scream til you turn blue, or any other method that might get my attention. Thanks in advance. --Droidbear79

Thanks for the reply. I'll consider that. As for now, I'm running the angdroid version of r2d2 full with the black bar theme, and 928droid swype keyboard. After removing a couple redundant applications from the theme, I'm running quite stable.
Installing the theme over star wars full duplicated my calendar, email, and text messaging apps causing double messages. Simply removing the apk from zip solved that issue.

I tried apex 1.4.1 and liked it with the watermark theme, but hated the boot screen so much I Uninstalled. I also found I've become addicted to blur. I do wish I had my stock system where everything worked to add stuff to, but for now this seems to be working out. Although I would love to get my hands on the 928 droid theme "black glass" I'm using the swype skin and love it.

To be completely honest, though I do enjoy having my R2 tweaked even just a little, I feel like I murdered my favorite droid by deleting the backup. And that guilt is multiplied by my dad who is likely going to get it next when I upgrade.

LOL no shouldn't delete backup especially ones u need to unroot or changing ROMs. OK well take things slow and give ur dad something useable so he doesn't frezk out. Lol...I'm on my Xoom now so I have to say this thing is even greater than my d2g

I think I might have it. I'm still rooted and deodexed; things that are good anyway... But I found in the R2 section most of the original files that were used to create the 2.4.5 roms in the first place. I took Angdroid's full rom and copied back a few files from the originals to get my custom wallpapers (ESB R2D2, and ESB Lightspeed) to work again, put back the original Bootscreen, and got the system version information restored to 2.4.5.A957... Then decided to leave out a few things... Blockbuster, amazon, and such...
These may be all just simple little things, but it brings me great joy to be piecing back together my little droid. (that way I won't feel quite so bad when I decide to try something new) I'm thinking, just for the fun of it, I should locate the original Best of R2D2 movie file, since I still have the app for it.

My dad won't mind some custom content, but he would like to see all the star wars stuff left alone as much as possible. It was funny, cuz before I decided to go ahead with root/flash, I told him what I was about to do, and told him to rest assured, that I'd have the backup to fall back on... D'Oh! He was really bummed when I told him. Actually told me I murdered R2D2. So piecing him back together has been a fun challenge for me... a noob... who otherwise hasn't much clue as to what I'm doing. But I'm learning quickly from my mistakes, and have picked up a few tricks along the way, so all is not lost. dancedroid

Hahaha u can't mess with the star, R2D2. Oh he must've been a big fan like I was many years ago, couldn't stop watching it when it first came out. Well main thing u get it working and know what ur doing.
