HELP! when I go to home screen, it takes forever to load up shortcuts and widgets

not every time mind you, but many times, i am unable to change pages or see anything other than the background and the 'call' 'browser' and 'apps' button at the bottom. I cannot interact at all with my phone until everything appears.

froyo stock on a droid 1.

any ideas? please help!

i have asked this question everywhere atleast 3 times and have never heard ANYTHING back from ANYONE
this is getting really old.

try searching sreen redraws. my phone does this all the time no matter what im running even stock 2.0 nothing installed but what comes with the phone and no fix has helped me

Your phone is killing your home screen to free up memory. Are you playing flash games or movies in the browser before you go back to your home screen? Anything thats memory intensive will cause you're home screen to have to reload (aka redraw).

Try installing Launcher Pro from the market, its a home replacement app. Its 10x better than the stock home app but it also has settings to keep it stored in memory so you get less redraws. Try it and see if it works well for you. It has tons of settings, just hit menu from your home screen and click on preferences.

What apps are you running? Sounds like you might have too many apps/widgets running in the background OR one or more poorly designed apps/widgets.

is there anyway to tell android to not kill the stock launcher?

not really, even if you found a way i wouldn't do it. It kills the home screens because it NEEDS to. If you told android to never kill the home screen then whatever memory intensive program you are using will be very laggy because of insufficient memory available.

There is not nearly enough information here for anybody to make a diagnosis. My initial thought is that I agree with aminaked-too many widgets, a badly coded app, too much stuff running in the background or a misbehaving task killer.

  • How long has this been going on? Did it always happen?
  • How many widgets are you running and what are they?
  • Are you using a task killer?
  • When does the problem occur? Unlocking the phone? Rebooting? Exiting a menu?
  • Have you tried removing widgets?
  • When you exit an app, are you pressing the home screen or using the back button or exit key?

The more information you provide the faster you will get suggestions for fixes.

I had the same problem too, and I was told to download launcher pro, and so far it has seemed to help with the lag on the homescreen.

Fixed the problem

I had the same problem. I fixed it without any of these launcher apps:

Step 1. Whatever widget you have on your home screen, turn the AUTO SYNC off for it
under Accounts & Sync.

Step 2: On Oct 5th buy an iPhone 5 and dump your android into a trash can. You dont even
need to try and re-sell it on ebay or craigslist, just ... dump it!

Step1 worked for me, cant wait for step 2!

I think you have animation settings on instead of off this way the phone can focus on loading Apps and widgets. Also you shouldn't have too many widgets on the screens for this very reason.

A few launchers have an option to "lock home in memory". But what works really well, if you're rooted, is creating a local.prop file in the data folder setting your launcher to 0. I almost never get screen redraws since using that trick (there's a topic over in the BB thread). What does happen when using a memory intensive app is some of my widgets or other processes/services will get temporarily killed.

But this is part of the curse of Android's customization. Especially with the low ram on the D1, it's easy to chew-up with widgets and various other programs/apps/services running in the background.
