Help, please!!

Hey everyone, I'm getting confused and overwhelmed. I'm going to england in a week and I can't afford the verizon global phone or the minutes/data charges because their through the roof. I've been searching in the market for apps that will allow me to call and text over wifi to the u.s. so I can talk to my family. I have downloaded netgear and textfree, but I don't know if their network and ours are similar and if i need a special connector? If anyone can help Mr I would really appreciate it, thank you!

Use gtalk to txt....I think skype may work over wifi, but not sure.

With Skype you have to subscribe for a number, $18 for 3 months or $60 for a year. With GV I know you can text all day long over wifi but for calls you have to have your phone activated with a carrier so not sure how calls will be handled even if on wifi...
