Has anybody tried...

I think it should. I use my Droid to run Netflix on my computer. Sometimes it runs smooth, sometimes it'll stop playback once or twice because connection slows.

Well the Droid does not have an infrared transmitter so it cannot connect that way. However if your blu ray is connected to your home network via wifi or ethernet this should be do able. I know you can run your PC from your droid using gmote for free in the market works great.

I don't have a home network. I live way out in the middle of nowhere. My droid is my only internet.
You don't need infrared. It has USB ports should be able to connect the same way I connect my droid to my laptop.

Nobody out there has tried this? I can get a Sony bluray for $100 but don't want to spend the $$ if it won't work any better then the laptop.

It would help if you specifically used the word tether in your OP. "Connected" could mean any number of things. In order to see what sort of performance you'll get with tethering you just have to try it out yourself. There are quite a few variables (including your specific coverage) that will affect tethering performance.

How are you expecting it to be "better" than the laptop?
