group IDs

Someone sent me a group text, and several recipients are not ID'd by name (only their phone #'s show). If those recipients are ID'd in the sender's phone, wouldn't the ID transmit to me too? My ignorance might be showing, but thanks for any explanation.

Nope. If you don't have those people saved in your phone, you'll just see the number. At least, that's been my experience.

This thread reminds me though that I should probably add the one lady that's not in my contacts in my latest group text session to my phonebook in case I need to get ahold of her. Too bad I just reset my phone this morning and didn't bother to back my texts up.

Go into vtext.com and pull it from there.

Nah. I'm not worried about it. It'll be an ongoing conversation for quite some time. I'll just snag it next time someone responds. ;)

It's interesting how one can respond to the group, and a conversation can be had between people that only know one another by phone numbers. I can kinda see the point about security, except that sender is already leaking phone numbers amongst a small circle. Anyway, maybe it is bad etiquette from the sender for not naming the recipients in the text.

I would assume that goes back to before group texts were a real thing. You could text the same message to a large group, but everyone would get their own message. When group texting pumped them all together, people didn't really seem to think about the fact that they're still being out everyone's number along with the message.

I have one person in one group that occasionally only sends her response to just me.

There's a fine line there where you'd hope that the person who started the thread knows for sure that others don't mind their number being shared, even if there are several in the group that would show just numbers.

There really should be a better way, but this is what we have.

Personally, I prefer for my number to not just be given out to anybody & everybody.
