Gps question

Ok so I am going camping/hiking this weekend. I was wondering if the in-Phone GPS will work without cell tower connection. I plan on using this app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grdurand.hiker

I don't need real fancy features, basically I am looking to set a "home" point, and use GPS to point in that direction. It would be nice for it track how many miles away, etc too.

Will these apps work, or do they require a data or verizon connection?

If your phone has GPS it isn't dependent on WiFi. If you have an app installed some can pre download maps and those don't require a cell signal (data). So the answer is yes, it will work. No WiFi required.
