I'm looking for an application that turns the GPS off when your phone is asleep. If anyone can help me out in my search for this app, please leave me a reply.
This is not necessarily true. Your phone can be "asleep", yet some apps running in the background might still access GPS.
Examples include weather apps - many default to using GPS if it is available to check your location, then pull down the latest weather for that area. Then when you "wake" your phone, you already have the latest weather info at your fingertips.
Another more specific example is Locale, and also Geodelic. They will both utilize GPS data in the background, if GPS is on, because of their nature. Locale makes your phone behave differently depending on where you're at. Geodelic (also known as Sherpa on T-mobile) is another geo-specific app, showing what restaurants are nearby, etc.
The only way to ensure that nothing is using GPS while the phone is asleep is to specifically turn GPS off. I have Locale configured so that GPS is only turned on when I'm in my car (which can be identified by my Droid sitting in my Car Dock).
Just add the power control widget to one of your screens. It is super useful you can turn on and off wireless, bluetooth, gps, sync, and screen brightness. I use this all the time.
It's a free app and I love it! It basically allows you to set a schedule for various settings on your phone... volume settings, wifi on/off, etc. and you define what days and specific times, things change.
I have mine set to turn volumes down automatically at 8:30am on weekdays (when I get to my office) plus turn on wifi,.. then at 5pm on weekdays, it turns off wifi, turns up all my volumes, etc...
I also have other settings for weekends. I have had the app installed for about a month now and I only set it up once. It runs itself and I don't need to do anything!
EDIT!!! After posting this reply with pics, I just realized, I don't think Timeriffic has a setting for GPS?! Oh well, I'll leave this reply up though, because it IS a nice app and if you're looking for automated, time specific settings, this app is a good solution
I downloaded the power control app from the market. It works great for me not sure if that is necessarily what you are looking for but you can turn on and off things like bluetooth and gps whenever you'd like. It's really easy.
