Google Voice and SMS

How exactly do I get SMS to work?

I've had Google Voice for months and have the app. I chose to not use it to make calls, only to be my default voicemail manager. I would, however, like to utilize the free SMS feature for out of network texting but can't find the option ANYWHERE in the app.

hit menu...and then "compose"

There isn't an option there for me.

My menu consists of these options:
Refresh
Labels
Balance
Settings
Help

Nothing more.

I accidentally signed up for the Non-google version not a Google Number.
