Going to Dominican Republic With S3

I am going to be on vacation in the Dominican Republic in a couple weeks and was wondering if there was a method to unlock my Verizon S3 for different carriers and purchase a prepaid SIM card once there to use for the week.

Posted under general so I could get more opinions on local carriers. Figured it was a broader audience that the S3 forum.
 
The only way I am aware of requires you to be rooted. There is a thread over at xda-developers about it.

I am rooted with boot loader unlocked and running synergy Rom. I'll check the thread in xda. I guess my more specific question would be about the carriers available and if the radio in the s3 is compatible with the network they are running
