Going on a cruise

I'm going on a cruise in Feb and want to be able to get on the internet when I am in port to check e-mail but I want to make sure that I don't get any text or voice messages. From what I understand there are plenty of places to get free wifi. Whats the best way to do this
thanks
jeff

You can also call Verizon. When I went to the Middle East I gave them my arrival and departure dates. I asked them to turn off voice calls, text messaging, and only allow 3G data. The airplane mode wifi also works if you can find I hotspot. I just didn't want to be at the whim of a hotspot I wanted to be able to get map data while I was out and about.
