Gmail notifications not arriving to my phone

Someone please help. I want my phone to ring and show in status bar when I receive new gmail. I don't hear anything. What am I doing wrong?

Email notifications - notify in system bar when email arrives is checked

Notify once - notify once for new email, not for every new message is unchecked (was previously checked)

Nothing at all. Is there something I am missing?

Did you sync gmail in account settings?

I did and it keeps unsyncing. I don't know why.
