Gmail in real-time on Messages widget, or a "summary" widget?

On a Motorola Droid 2 (stock 2.2) is there a way to configure the Messages widget to show any new Gmail messages in real-time, vs. waiting for the polling interval, and to show 3 or 4 in short listing?

Alternatively, are there any third-party widgets or themes that are similar to a Blackberry theme (BB Dimension Today) we had which shows the latest recent messages/appointments/calls, like:

Messages
..Subject 1
..Subject 2

Calendar
..mm/dd Appointment 1
..mm/dd Appointment 2

Call Log
..###

Did you setup the Gmail account as IMAP or enabled data push in the Email app account settings?

I believe data push enabled, not IMAP, but how do I confirm?
