I found with the Bionic that the hotspot killed the battery fast. You will find that USB tethering is the only way to go for extended periods of time anyhow. Have you tried the internal USB tethering? Saves you from having to initiate PDANet all the time plus you cannot get to secure websites unless you buy the full version.

And PDANet, I got a "HTC signal error" popup on the laptop from the icon so I quit using that quickly lol.

Wrap 30 feet of ru58 coax cable around both devices and use inductive tethering, also helps reception issues. Probably double your speed and charge your bat ray too.
