Galaxy S4 charging port and update issues

A week ago my phone started draining while on the charger but showed that it was still charging. So I called tech support.
They said it sounded like a bad battery and sent me a battery and new charger. Also told me to go to the local repair place for my carrier.
The lady there looked at it for a few seconds, said it was my charging port. Unfortunately the phone is out of warranty. So I was told I could file an insurance claim or take it to an independent repair shop.
I wanted a second opinion as the lady didn't spend much time looking at my phone so I called back tech support.
They remote viewed my phone and said my problem was because my phone was not updated as there was not enough space on my phone.
So I bought an SD card and cleared my phone out. Called tech support back as my phone still wasn't registering an available update. I was told to go to best buy and have the Samsung people side load the update.
So I went and he agreed my battery was bad (still hadn't received my new one). However, he couldn't do the update due to charging port issues. So he sent me onto a repair shop where I was then told my charging port was fine and it was just my battery.
So I waited for my battery to come in. When I got it and the charger, my phone was miraculously fine for the whole day and charging perfectly.
Yesterday it started having issues again and I had to leave home without it so it could slowly charge while off (otherwise, the battery still drained while on charger).
I finally called insurance and my deductible is obviously more than I really want to spend. Calling repair places, the cost is the same as my insurance deductible.
I looked up the price for the part and it seemed pretty inexpensive, which I was skeptical of considering how much I was quoted to repair the phone. I know they have labor costs but the discrepancy between part and the work just seemed unreasonable. So I called the repair place back to get them to break down the cost and tell me how much the part is. I was told that they can't give out that information, which is strange to me.
I also called the insurance person back and asked if there was anything that could void my insurance. I was told that even if I sent my phone back in pieces, it would be the same deductible and everything.

So my thought at this point is, I may just try to do it myself. I don't really have anything to lose. If I repair it correctly, I've only spent about $15. If not, I just send it in for insurance claim and get a new phone.
I already fix our computers myself so I'm not a complete novice in any case.

As a side note, my phone is working perfectly today but I feel like it's a matter of time.

I have a few questions though.

Could it be possible that all this is being caused by my update issues?

Also, I know the replacement part differs by carrier (the antenna is on the board that's attached to the charging port).

So why do some of the sites I see just sell the ports without carrier listed?

Thanks!
