One of the new features of Android 4.0, is the way to unlock the device to enter your phone. While we have gotten use to gestures or even a finger scanner, get ready to Face Unlock. For those that watched the live presentation tonight, you might recall a face slap while the demo failed to unlock the phone. I think the neato factor of this feature is great, however how functional will it be for everyday uses?

I agree, it is definitely neat-o. But half the time I am unlocking my phone when its still partially in my pocket or while I have something else going on. In other words I am not sure how practical it would be to have to look the phone dead in the face every time just to unlock it.

I think it can just be one way of multiple to unlock... I noticed last night when it failed to pick up his face (and I don't think it actually failed, I don't he reset it after it failed on the first dude) it reverted back to the classic android 9 dot patter to unlock.

I agree, I would think that it is one of several as well. I was merely commenting on the practicality of it. Don't get me wrong though it is a very cool security feature for sure.

Wha!? Awesome!! I agree though about having to look into the phone being potentially inconvenient. What I think they ought to do is mesh the standard unlock options, be it PIN, password, or pattern with the facial recognition. Basically when you look at the phone, you'll see your currently set unlock option slightly transparent with what the front facing camera sees in the background. Basically what this will allow you to do is unlock the phone if you can't look at it, but if you can, just hold it up to your face, without having to select one or the other, or fail first. Back to work Google! :)

I wonder how long before the first finder bender because some chic is making googly eyes at her phone to try and unlock it while pulling up to a stopped car at a red light or driving through a parking lot.

I wonder if there is a way to immediately switch, or maybe it's smart enough where it's too dark or there is no face it will default to the pattern/pin. The last thing I want is to have it attempt to take my picture 9 times to only then show me the pattern/pin unlock, talk about a waste of time if you simply wanted to see you texted you.

What if you are in a rush, walking fast, and you need to unlock your phone?

It'd be a pain in the a** to get a good picture of you when your walking and your phone is shaking.
And what do you when it's dark?

This sounds more like a gimmick then something actually useful.

If they did it in a practical way, I would imagine that you hit the power button, screen comes on to the default non-face recog unlock screen (pin/pattern). At the bottom will be two side by side buttons, one for emergency calls and the other for face unlock. tap face unlock, it shows the FFC area, smile, if it works, your in, if not, kicks back to pin screen. What would be awesome is if it actually recorded the picture of failed attempts so you could see who tried to get in your phone....

Yeah I like that idea a lot. In fact now that you say it I almost hope it is a feature since it pretty much makes sense to have it since it already has the capability to recognize its owner. May as well rat out the others while its at it!

I wouldn't be surprised if it showed up shortly after release as an app or in custom roms if it isn't a release feature.

It would even be nice if it snapped a pic every time the wrong pin was entered, but only stored the last 8 pics or something to keep usage low.

I wonder how long before people try holding it up to the owner's Facebook profile (or some other) pic to see if it will let them in.
