Free Texting App?

Is there any app out there that would allow me to bypass the carrier's texting fees so that I could text Canada for free? I'm thinking along the lines of something web-based, if that makes any sense, kind of like that iPhone app that allowed users to make web-based called, thus bypassing their minutes.

Skype maybe? but both users will need it as I'm sure you're aware of...

Try Heywire by mediafriends, inc. It's in the market but I think it might also be web based. I'm not sure. I used it on my xoom and it seemed to work great. The only draw back is it will assign you and different phone number that is used by the app. I haven't used it that much so maybe someone else can chime in.

Get a Google Voice number at Google. I have been texting for free for quite awhile now.
