I'm currently in India (I live in US and have Verizon).

I am in a CDMA area (Mumbai) but can't register onto their network.

I assume it's because I forgot to *228 and pick option 2 before I left.

Question: is there anything I can do now (I just want to be able to SMS and make emergency calls), or can my phone ONLY be programmed for roaming coverage while on Verizon's network?

Note: I didn't have this problem when I came here a few months back, but I have SBF'd and switched to CM7 ROM since then (and have not done *228 since)

Thanks, all.

I would call them collect, +1 908 559 4899 (assuming you have another phone you can borrow/use!) to ask. All the instructions suggest that you must call before you leave, so you might be out of luck doing that. Is the phone unlocked? If so, you can go the GSM route using e.g. Vodafone/Airtel/Reliance/Aircel. Verizon Global Services should be able to give you the unlock code even though you are out of the country. This assumes that your version of CM7 works well with GSM.

^ yep, even if you did that before you left your network would still drop when you left the US.

The question is whether that *228 2 loads a complete PRL with worldwide CDMA networks listed, or you need to contact VZW Global Support to enable uploading that complete PRL to your phone.

If u can't activate it you can use the phone to make phonecalls with an App called NetTalk... its 100% free but you have to connect to Wifi to us it. To send and receive messages also connected to Wifi u can use TextPlus app
