I am running Liberty 1.5. I tried several others but came back to Liberty. You can read about the others such as Apex and Rubix, they all offer some different things that might be of interest to you but Liberty was the right mix for me.
Liberty won't run without the romer patch, bad bad suggestion to give a noob....
He should go for Fission which is the only one made for the D2G.
You can not flash a rom that is not for the D2G and flashing a D2 rom will turn to bricks.
There is a project from Get R Done group called romer that will make a D2 Rom work on the D2G but it has sensor issues.
It requires running an update after flashing the rom.
For a newb the best thing to start is to use the FRM (Fission Rom Manager) and use that to flash away from stock.
Hexor also has a Blur free version of the stock rom if you are interested.
Whatever you do before you flash be sure to download RSDLite any drivers needed for that to work and a copy of the stock D2G sbf file in case you get into trouble.
Then you will be able to flash back to stock and try again!

+1...i will suggest that goes for the Fission for the beginners Liberty-Romers + sensor should be very complicated for the noobs..just play for the Fission first and go to second step after.
The D2G has a dual band radio and just like it was very important when flashing Wm roms you can't ever mix and match roms on disparate radio systems without running into a brick wall.
Most droids are CDMA or GSM.
When you combine both it makes for a very specific software and driver requirement not found on other phones.
So Roms aimed at other phones will not work properly if at all.
Learn your way around the Flashing first get comfortable with it and then you can move on to play with things like the romer patch which when completed will open up all the D2 roms at least and maybe even open up more selection than that once it is a perfected patch.
+1 to that post. We're still working on sensors but so far no luck.... it takes a little getting used to but the lack of sensors really isnt that big of a deal.
The sensors right now are the only thing holding me back from trying it.
I'm sure they will get it eventually and as much as I like trying different ROMS to see what is possible I am a little more interested in a properly and fully functional phone! LOL
The updates to Romer seem fast and furious so I bet in no time the sensor thing will get resolved. Then I'll wonder where a week of my life went while trying all the new roms that will work then! lol
