Firmware Updates

Why don't handset manufacturers such as HTC, motorola, and samsung (etc), just do what Apple does with software updates?

As you all know, all you have to do to update your iPhone is plug it into your computer and load up itunes, download and install, you're done. Quick and simple process.

Why is it so difficult for (Insert phone maker here) to simply put an update tool on their websites? Instead, the process takes even longer because the carriers have to drag their feet with the update.

All in how the contract was negotiated. Apple wields a big stick and they handle all the tech support for the Iphone. Its what they wanted so its what they got. The others follow traditional carrier based support.

The Open Handset Alliance is the one who truly wields a big stick. They currently control 43.5% of smartphone shipments for the 3rd quarter of 2010. They should do something about this firmware update lag time.

I think it comes down to who's doing the tech support. Vzw does it for its phone so it will obviously wants final say on any updates. They have quality standards it has to meet before a release. The Iphone doesn't deal with these because ATT doesn't deal with any tech support.
