Fiance's Droid 4 won't update and other issues

My fiance bought a used phone and at first it didn't want to let him switch his phones over. After 2 hours with Verizon, we finally got it working. What happened was someone hacked it and verizon's systems couldn't recognize it. Everything works fine except when he calls people he can't hear them unless he puts it on speaker. They can hear him fine but he's not getting any sound. Now, we've been trying to update his phone from ICS to JB but it's not working. It'll go through the whole download process but fail around 25% completion of the installation. Could this be because of the original hack? What can we do to get it to update it and also what can we do to fix the phone call thing?

Use jsnweitzel's Droid 4 Utility ICS Only located in the Hacks section to fastboot the phone. Option 11 will completely wipe the phone and restore to stock ICS. Option 12 will leave your data intact. Considering the issues you are having I would wipe it all. If it's a software problem, this should fix it.
