Feedback tethering your X to a notebook/netbook

I'm looking for feedback from anyone that's received their new X and tethered it to a notebook or netbook for Internet connectivity. I understand using this application - PdaNet -- USB Tether/Bluetooth DUN for Android - should be a simple matter.

I'll be upgrading (migrating) my VZW netbook contract to an X and tethering to the netbook for an Internet connection. Before I move the service over to the X - effectively removing Internet connectivity from the netbook - I want to be sure this is working in the real world and not just in theory. :)

Wow - fell to page 5 pretty quick.

Anyone, please?

Connect your X to a computer and access the Internet on that computer through your phone?

C'mon - someone tether. dancedroid

I cannot confirm that the app will work on the X but I do know it works on the original droid. So I would expect it would work for the x, as it has for most phones.

I also used pdanet to tether but after the trial period you have to pay 30$ (one time fee). There is another app that works the same called EasyTether. After your trial run you have to buy it but its only 10$ and works the same way. Just keep an eye on your data usage. I used 10 gigs the first month of having my evo

Data usage shouldn't be a problem, as we aren't limited to the amount you can use while tethered via USB.

At least, according to this thread - http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-x-general-discussions/54811-hot-spot.html#post588260

Your unlimited data isn't unlimited. If you go over 5 Gigs in a billing cycle you'll could get a nasty gram from big red telling you to cool it or they will cancel your service. Happened to my buddy. I've run a lot of data through my slingbox during hockey season when I'm out and about and I've never come close to the "unlimited limi," but he was streaming all kinds of things, downloading movies, etc... and he flew over 5 gigs and they weren't happy with him.

If you look in the fine print about the data plan it's in there.

Has anyone used the Pay version of EasyTether Yet? what speeds do you get? Do you have to pay for the Mobile hotspot throug VZW for it to work? I am paying for the mobile HotSpot.... and I am not getting great speeds with either PDANet or EasyTether...

Wishlist:

Drop the $20 a month charge for Mobile Hotspot and use USB tether uncapped.

Backnblack your absolutely right the only things i have noticed so far that i couldnt access was my email and some sites that require to be logged into. I went ahead with Easytether just because its cheaper. Just a warning for some who are gonna ditch there internet for tethering. I have sprint and i use tether only now and this month i have used 11gigs of data with 6 days left on my cycle. This may not be typical for all just keep an eye on your use. I'm not sure if Verizon has a 5gig cap or its unlimited so make sure you know where you stand so you dont get a shocking bill

Nova with tether you dont need hotspot

This is with the trial version of PDA Net....

And this one is with the trial of EasyTether...

And this one is with the Mobile HotSpot....

How can I get faster speeds????

This is false. Unlimited is unlimited. There is not a 5 Gig cap on unlimited data.

Please feel free to show me in the fine print where it says Unlimited is really a 5 gig cap.

The only thing VZW has a 5 gig cap on is
1) mobile broadband plans using a USB modem or MiFi or any other Mobile broadband card.
2) Any MBBC (mobile broadband connect) capable device that adds the tethering feature. This would be an additional $30 on top of your $29.99 UNLIMITED data plan. Or if your are on a BB enterprise server and have the $44.99 plan you can add the MBBC tethering plan for $15 and have 5gigs to tether with.

Bottom line. If you plan on tethering your device to a laptop or PC then you are supposed to caugh up and additional $30 or $15 depending on what smartphone data plan you have. Either way it still totals $60

And even further more.. the data to the device itself is still unlimited. And the tethering is capped at 5gigs.

Anyone using PDAnet, easytether, wifi tether is strait up stealing bandwidth.
Not trying to start a moral debate on wether you should use a 3rd party app or not. That is on you. I could careless.
What I do care about is the spread of mis-information.

What is really a shame is how verizon can give out free 5GB hotspot to pre plus users and hit thos eon a droid X $20 for 2GB. 2GB should come free if not matching the pre's 5GB i mean we do pay $30 for mobile internet (same i pay for home internet). I am sure this topic has been beat to death and verizon knows they don't ahve as many pre users as droid (my thoughts, not fact)

Just a followup to my initial post - I'm up on easytether and it works great!

I downloaded easytether lite first, followed the directions that pop up (enable usb debugging, etc.) and it worked like a charm.

I tried accessing a secure website, and it started timing out. I removed easytether lite, paid $9.95 for the full version and I'm good to go.

The speeds while browsing are similar to the mobile broadband connection I had on the netbook previously.

So - I swapped the $60 per month data only plan on the netbook for a Droid X @ $64 per month, cancel the landline at home to save $30 per month, and end up with way more for less. :icon_ banana:

They all should be the same speeds. If anything, hotspot should be faster since it isn't going thru a proxy. I did a few tests at speedtest.net with the Hotspot feature on my X and I got over 1.9mpbs download everytime.

When speed testing, I always place my phone in an optimum location away from interfering devices and stand it upright for max signal.

BTW, my Hotspot feature just works and I don't see it in My Account at verizonwireless.com. I can tether with it from my laptops and other Android devices.
