experience hanging TV's? GET IN HERE

okay heres my dilemma I've hung many flat panel TV's close to 100 but have never had to hang on like this.

i have a exterior wall with no studs what the wall consists of is drywall with 2x1 lathes between the drywall and concrete block. so there is about a 1.25" gap between the drywall and the concrete block

anyone know how to hang a TV in this situation.......

this is just a guesstimate but the TV weighs about 60-ish pounds.

I would cut the drywall and use spacers to fix the mount to be flush with the face of the wall....
That way the block is holding the TV.


Home Depot has nice aluminum spacers.....

this is kinda what i was thinking since i already have some heavy duty concrete anchors and some good tapcons to go with it.... i think a small hole saw or spade bit would give me enough room to work with.

i would just need the spacers .....

Do you mind cutting into the drywall and adding blocking? 60lb TV is a lot of weight. You cut out some drywall to the brick exterior wall and add blocking with 2x material. Tapcon screws would work perfectly in the brick.

If you are at home depot you can always use black pipe for the spacers if the above mentioned aluminum ones don't like like they will work. You could oversize the pipe with fender washers to make it sturdier.

Of course you probably could cut a bigger section out of the wall, mount a piece of plywood back there and then re-sheetrock that small section to make it look like new again and then go from there.

In my past life, I worked for Circuit City as a home theater design and install specialist. What the others have said is spot on, you'll need to cut a section of the wall and mount some spacers into the block. PM me if you have any issues, I may have pictures somewhere that will help.

definitely some aluminum spacers. id make sure they were pretty wide too. maybe spacers with 4 holes for a tapcon screw to go thru into the block.

yeah i always buy my mounts from monoprice.... you cant beat the quality and the price.


i think im gonna go with the heavy duty concrete anchors as well as a handgull of those dywall anchors too just to be safe. i thought about adding more wood support but the only thing that will fit between the drywall and the block would be a single sheet of plywood which wouldnt be doing a whole lot to help my situation... besides that would only make it more difficult to run wires in the wall.

i wont have time to do it till later this week but ill post back with some results.
