eris vs hero color depth difference?

I could not find this with a search and wondered if any of you folks have come across this. I thought the two phones were identical except for the shell so when I first saw this on a website I thought it was a misprint. But now I have seen it several times:

Sprint Hero screen=65k/16bit
Eris screen=262k/18 bit

Probably not much difference to the casual observer but interesting nontheless. I wonder how HTC/VW managed the upgrade?

The Eris is quite different actually. Its a improved version of the Sprint Hero with added features like proximity sensor, not stupid bubble at the track ball, slimmer more compact, practically no lag issues like on the Hero. Its quite a different phone...
