Twitter verification has always been a method for protecting the rich and famous. The little blue check next to someones twitter handle lets you know that Twitter sees this as the actual person. There will always be satire accounts, and random fake accounts. This cuts down on the confusion of what the real life person is actually tweeting.
Us normal folk don't have to worry about other people pretending to be us on social media therefore getting this little check has been nearly impossible for the average joe. Twitter has decided that even the little guys should be able to feel special. There is now an application process to become verified. You will need a verified phone number, bio, profile photo, and website to be considered for verification.
