Droid3 one week old, I ran 2 tests on 8/4/11 and then 1 this morning and these are the results I have gotten (no wifi, no bluetooth, nothing running, over 3G)

8/4/11 (1) - 557 kbps DL, 697 kbps UL, 125ms Ping
8/4/11 (2) - 1110 kbps DL, 820 kbps UL, 125ms Ping
8/9/11 - 727 kbps DL, 893 kbps UL, 118ms Ping

Is this normal? On my D1 I was getting around the same, between 500-700 for both, so I would have thought this would be much faster. the 8/4/11 pings I did after using the D3 for 1 full day.

Pretty much. 3G speed can vary from day to day, location to location, even time of day to time of day depending on tower saturation.

Here's mine from 7/11 (I got my D3 on 7/9).

Did I read that right that you were expecting a 3G phone to be much faster than another 3G phone in a speed test?

Sorry. I was tired...

You should get similar 3G speeds on all 3G devices on Verizon, however benckmarks and Linpack scores are where the D3 will outshine the others.

While the data comes in over 3G pretty much the same, the ability of the phone to handle that data is greater....so even though speeds may be identical (D1 to D3) you should notice web pages display faster and things should have access to the data faster.

Just doing some test on my D1 vs. my D3 on WiFi for speed test.....you can see the D3 handles the data coming in much better when the flow is much more capable (same WiFi connection for both phones)..

D1 WiFi

The D3 is processing and moving the data stream through much faster. Better WiFi chipset is probable as well...but the ability for the "system" to handle the data flow is greater.

That makes a lot more sense. Thank you Tcrews again!

Very cool thanks for sharing that test. I wonder if there is any difference in the wireless chip between the phones or if the main bottleneck of the D1 is simply (lack of) processing power to handle the incoming data?

I'm sorry Jeff. I reread what I wrote and it definitely came off with the wrong tone. I wasn't trying to be a smart-alec, I just wanted to clarify that those were the results you were expecting.

Again my bad and thanks for the info tcrews.

I'd guess it's a combination of the two. An improvement to the chipset as well as that chipset sitting on an improved and faster system (much faster CPU, more RAM, etc..).

As another comparison, my Viewsonic Gtablet connected to the same network scores:

6ms ping
5.43Mbps download
14.70Mbps upload

Viewsonic Gtablet = 1ghz dual core Nvidia2 CPU, 512meg RAM

The difference in ping stands out to me. Did you run multiple tests with each or just a single one?

Yeah that 10ms ping is pretty incredible. I would venture to guess more tests with the D3 would yield higher pings. But hey a guy can dream! dancedroid

The Droid 3 is consistently getting great pings on this server/test over WiFi.

D3 - 9m, 14ms, 13ms
D1 - 251ms, 398ms, 473ms, 339ms....
Gtablet - 8ms, 5ms, 4ms (great pings, still not as fast download/upload as the D3 though close)
