Can you change the red camera button on the side of the phone to do anything different? Ex launch app turn phone off/on anything but the camera

Nope. I mean it's possible, but there's no way for an end-user to just download an app or ROM that remaps the camera button. Most people like the camera button to be for the camera lol, so such a thing does not exist, as far as I know.

There is an app floating around that will do this but it requires root. I wish I could be of more help but all I can remember is that I saw it on xda.

I set mine 2 open up a new txt message I use handcent SMS not sure but that might have something 2 do wit it.

Yes for handcent under send message settings you can enable quick compose so when you long press the camera button it will open a new text message

I found an app that I know works on my OG Droid, Button Shortcut. No root required, search in the market, and you can assign any app to the Camera and longpress search
