Droid WiFi Quesion.

Mkay.

So I have the original Droid with the most recent Froyo.

I backed my "N" Linksys router down to "G" (dammit!) so that I could use the WiFi with my Droid thinking that it should be faster than 3G.

I have perfect reception to wireless laptops from the basement, where the router is located, all the way up to the 2nd floor.

I'm sitting here now, 5 feet from the router and my Droid, in the Settings/Wireless and Networks Menu, shows poor reception.
Sometimes it will show excellent sitting here.
Then upstairs I almost always get a poor reading.

Any thoughts on this?
Thanks
B

Yep. When I had this issue making my SSID display made my signal level change if slowing on the notification bar. Otherwise it showed signal/no signal.

A hidden SSID won't stop anyone from hacking in. Password protection and encryption WILL stop people from hacking in, especially if you rotate the password every few days (it takes that long for a brute-force attack if you're running the high-end encryption). Script kiddies will give up by then unless they REALLY want access.

Hidden SSID is sort of like taking the numbers off the front of your house. At first glance, it seems safer, but as soon as you do any digging, you'll realize that house 4 is between houses 2 and 6.

There are a billion software packages that will display networks with hidden SSIDs. It's a common network troubleshooting technique.

Also, OP -- why not run mixed mode? You'll still be at G speeds for your phone, but you wont lose the N capability on other devices, especially if you turn off WiFi when you're not using it on your phone.

OP here.

I did some research and found lots of info supporting your position.

I tried making SSID visible and WOW!
The signal on my Droid went from almost zero to all the way up!!

AND, where mixed mode did not work with SSID hidden it does now!

So glad I finally asked for help and thanks to all for chiming in.

WooHoo!
Droid DOES!
