droid razr stock text program can't add a name to a phone number

I have a Droid Razr. I use the stock texting program. my contacts have texted me and all that shows up is a phone number. I tried to add a name to it but it's not an option anywhere that I can see. Can someone please direct me to where this option exists? (in addition to the name, I am also not able to add a photo.) I have that person in my contacts under people. I have their picture under contacts in people. and their stupid phone number shows up in contacts under people. AND i can text them that way as well. BUT when they text me... only their phone number shows up! I then have to try to figure out who it is! Why won't it combine? why can't it figure out that this phone number belongs to this contact? LOL it could be something with syncing but I've tried that and maybe I'm doing something wrong. help?

You might try clearing data / cache of your SMS app to see if that helps (system settings - apps - all - SMS app that you use - open, clear cache, data)...good luck!
