Droid a855 can't get to the bootloader

I'm sure this was covered before, I just couldn't find the thread!

We got the Verizon Droid 1 a855 wet. When I start it up, it goes to the bootloader screen:

Bootloader
2C.7C


Battery OK
OK to Program
Connect USB
Data Cable

When I start it holding the X key, it does get to the screen with the picture of the triangle, exclamation point, and the droid, but the up/down volume doesn't get to the menu to select the boot/rom options.

The phone had not been rooted, it was pretty stock.

Any advice?
