Droid 2, slot for card

Under the battery of my D2 is a Motorola dummy chip, black and plastic. It is bigger than the SD card which sits next to it. Now, my question is: is this a slot for a world chip that would allow me to use my original D2 in Europe. The representative at Verizon thinks so. If not, why is it there? Does anyone have any info. on this?

I believe that it is useless on the original D2, it may only work on the D2 Global.
