Does phone update as soon as activated?

Ok,so stupid questions, but when you activate a new phone does it update to the latest version(OTA) automatically or is this done manually?
If I want to root a New Verizon HTC One M8 do I have to do it today before the latest OTA is pushed tomorrow?

For the first question.. I've had phones prompt me to install the latest version right away.. And I've had phones that didn't.. My latest 2 haven't.. But you can always delay taking the update too..

For the second question.. If there's a root method available for the device... I'd rootright away.. Because especially with verizon.. When you take tje update.. It may be a while before there is an exploit found. But I'm no expert.

I had to install the latest version i had done i manually. if there is a device you can do it directly
