Check the contacts that are going straight to voicemail. there is an option there that gives you the ability to send someone straight to voicemail. Maybe that was enabled somehow.
Besides the straight to voice mail setting, it could just be a plain old low signal or overwhelmed tower.
One the people I work with was complaining that all his calls where going to voice mail over the weekend. I racked my brain, looked into the setting and then when he got back I found he was out in the boonies some where and barely had a signal.
On a few of my phones that I have had, If I left it sitting in a certain place in my house it would never ring and just go to VM due to a bad signal.
In my area this problem is known as Verizon. I'm not knocking VZW, just saying that sometimes the cell tower is full, and sometimes the signal is weak, and sometimes, I think it just does it. Nothing to do with the actual phone of course. I lived a good 45 years without a phone on my hip, so I must have missed someone. I can live with this also.
