Despite Results, Samsung Plans to Appeal Court Decision in Apple v. Samsung

Could this be one of the moments when Samsung's lawyers don't know when to walk away from the poker table? Just yesterday we reported that the Apple vs. Samsung patent dispute retrial concluded last Friday. Although technically Apple won the lawsuit, the final damages awarded of $120 Million were so paltry compared to the previous victory from the first trial, that it basically amounted to an indirect win for Samsung. In fact, it is likely that Apple's legal costs will come close to that $120 Million figure.

Despite this, Samsung is planning to proceed with another appeal. Apparently, the reason why Samsung won't remain satisfied with the results is a matter of principle. According to Samsung's legal team, Apple purposefully omitted "real world evidence" that would have exonerated Samsung completely. Here's a quote from John Quinn, a lawyer on Samsung's legal team.

"Of course we're pleased that the jury awarded Apple 6 percent of what they were asking for. But even that can't stand, because Apple kept out all the real world evidence and didn't produce anything to substitute for it, so you have a verdict that's unsupported by evidence – and that's just one of its problems."

While it's easy to see why Samsung might want to keep pursuing this to achieve what it believes would be "real justice," it's hard not to see the bigger picture and wonder why they don't just let it go and move on. Plus, the damage award is so small overall that Samsung wouldn't even blink paying such a relatively minuscule price.

I wonder how much money has been spent compared to how much money was awarded. So stupid.

From what I understand, between the two companies, upwards of $200 Million has been spend litigating this case.

The lawyers are laughing their asses off while being driven to their penthouse in a limo. This is for pride and neither will let up. And you know what comes before a fall.
