deleting pics

I went and caused a fatal mistake. I deleted some pics directly from the files icon in the menu and after I've deleted them I still see the pics inn the gallery. Is tthere anyway to remove them? I long press the picture and the option to delete has been removed.

The only way I've found to do that is go into the DCIM folder and delete the thumbnails file.
Then I went into applications and cleared the data from the gallery.
